EES on the Tube: Then and Now
We have recently had two adverts displayed across TFL's London Underground network, advertising our Away with the Pharaohs podcast and our Online Courses. This has been part of our charitable mission to reach as many people as possible to promote Egyptian cultural heritage and expand our community passionate about the subject!
Did you spot our adverts on the Tube this spring?

However, this is not the first time that the EES has been seen on the London Underground network! In 1931, the Society presented a Loan Exhibition of ancient Egyptian jewellery at the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum. They advertised this display of jewellery, as well as other Egyptian antiquities from the sites of Amarna and Armant, on the Tube, much like our recent adverts 95 years later. See the poster they used below! The EES often held exhibitions following excavation work in Egypt, so that the excavators could show supporting members of the time the types of objects being discovered. This was also a motivation for the production of our 1930s Amarna replicas, such as our unfinished head of Nefertiti, since the original remained in Cairo. Check out our upcoming programme of events to see what the Society is currently offering and whether we have an exhibition or any archive currently on display.
Spot the difference!
The first poster is a draft example, where you can see that the top graphic is stuck on separately and someone has corrected the spelling of Tell el-Amarna and the Wellcome Collection in red (TA.WAD.02.003.2)! The second poster is what would have been featured on the London Underground in 1931 (TA.WAD.02.003.1).
