The Egypt Exploration Society was founded in 1882 largely thanks to the efforts of Amelia B Edwards following her visit ‘a thousand miles up the Nile’ in 1873. Since then, it has pioneered British archaeology in the Nile valley, supporting and promoting Egyptian cultural heritage around the world. Today, the Society is recognised as a British International Research Institute by the British Academy and maintains its work on education, training, and public engagement.

In this presentation the Society’s Director, Dr Carl Graves, will introduce the foundations of the Egypt Exploration Society and shine light on its long and complex past. It will end with a view to the future; a future informed by its past but not defined by it. Carl will end by asking attendees to reflect on what they expect to see in the Society’s future, inviting them to be part of its ongoing legacy.
