The last few years have seen an increase in the number of publications that critically reassess the inception of Egyptology as an area study in a context of colonial domination. While the role of archaeologists in constructions of Egyptological knowledge has been amply recognised, the contributions of ethnographers and anthropologists remain overlooked. However, anthropologists and archaeologists worked together in the field, and their observations influenced each other in ways that are yet to be explored.
This Spotlight Talk introduces the British Academy-funded project “Connecting with the Past”, which aims to investigate the impact of early ethnography on Egyptology. With a focus on the work of early 20th century anthropologists, we will explore to what an extent the observation of rural populations of Egypt at that time may have played a role in interpretations of the pharaonic past, and why this matters.
