Doors Open to Egypt’s Past
We opened our doors on Saturday 13 September as part of the Open House Festival 2025 — and Londoners couldn’t get enough! Nearly 200 people poured into the Society’s Doughty Mews headquarters to experience the world of ancient Egypt, as well as our history within Camden itself.

In the EES' library, which was the former home of Argentinian-American Egyptologist Ricardo Caminos, we celebrated his life by recreating his study for visitors to learn more about his career as an epigrapher.
From special displays about the EES' archaeological work to hands-on epigraphic activities to exploring the historic home of Ricardo Caminos, there was plenty to keep visitors inspired. A special exhibition, 'The Women Who Changed Egypt: Discovering Hatshepsut and Nefertiti' drew crowds eager to learn more about these trailblazing queens.

Visitors at the EES Open Day during the epigraphic activity, where they traced photographs or Ricardo Caminos' line drawings of scenes from the temple of Buhen.
Additionally, the open-shelf library, archival displays and volunteer projects revealed the EES’ 140-year legacy of research and discovery. Visitors also snapped up bargains at the second-hand book sale, enjoyed refreshments, and discovered the perks of membership!

We displayed our archive housed in Open Storage with special panels to highlight some of the archaeological sites we have worked at throughout our history. EES Volunteer Maia Nolan sits at the desk to discuss her current project to digitise the lantern slides in our collections, a sample of which was displayed behind her.
Events like this show just how much excitement there is for Egypt’s past — but they only happen with the backing of members and supporters. If you enjoyed the Open Day, or wish you’d been there, why not join the EES? Your membership helps fund our charitable mission, including outreach that brings ancient Egypt to life in London and beyond.
If you couldn't make our Open Day, then visit us during our opening hours of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30-16:30.
