Produced continuously for nearly 2000 years, shabtis are one the most prolific genres of material culture from ancient Egypt. Ideally, each figure would have been inscribed with the names and titles of their owner and in many cases shabtis are the only known attestation of even the most highly placed individuals. But what about the vast numbers of uninscribed examples? This talk introduces the shabtis collected throughout the 1886 field season at Tell Nebasha on behalf of the Egypt Exploration Society. Previously used by Petrie to plug rat holes, these figures have similarly infiltrated museums around the world and you may just spot one in your local collection!
