BEC5 goes virtual

The biannual Egyptology Congress will now be held virtually in 2020

The fifth British Egyptology Congress was due to be held on the 4th-6th September 2020 at Durham University. Due to the ongoing disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the success of our latest online events programme, the Egypt Exploration Society and our organising partners at Durham University have decided to hold BEC5 virtually this year using Zoom.

Presentation panels from the Congress schedule will be converted into separate online events which will be held throughout September and October. Attendees will be able to register for those panels that interest them most when registration opens in July 2020.

The Congress will be free to attend and open to anyone with an interest in the topics presented.

Holding BEC5 online provides an opportunity to open the Congress up to a truly global audience, something also reflected in the speakers that have already agreed to present their talks live online. As with a physical Congress, keynote presentations will be provided additional to the advertised panels and poster presentations will continue as usual. The only thing we cannot provide is your coffee breaks – so sit back, grab a (home-brewed) coffee, and enjoy presentations from some of the latest research in Egyptology around the world.

If you are not yet familiar with Zoom as an online event platform, then please consider attending some of our online event programme in advance of the Congress. No webcam or microphone is required, and you only need a PC/laptop (phones and tablets work too - but can be cumbersome) and speakers.

BEC5 will be available to attend for free. If you would like to support the Egypt Exploration Society in order to assist us in continuing BEC5 as well as its future publication, then please consider donating to the EES. If you are a publisher and would like to advertise through the Congress website (coming soon) then please contact [email protected].

We look forward to welcoming many of you, virtually, in September!
