Lessons in Egyptian Epigraphy: From Carter to Caminos

EES Director Carl Graves presents a history of epigraphy through EES excavations, focusing on Ricardo Caminos, for the Southampton Ancient Egypt Society. Start time: 14:00 (UK) / 16:00 (Egypt)

The Egypt Exploration Society pioneered Egyptian epigraphy when ‘tracers’, like Howard Carter, perfected the artform for the Archaeological Survey of Egypt. The same methods informed later epigraphic copying of monuments and this lecture explores the history of archaeological recording by the EES showing how ‘preservation by record’ continues to play a role in the field today.

At the heart of this story is Ricardo Caminos (below).

Often overlooked in the history of Egyptology, Ricardo played a huge role in recording inscriptions at Gebel Silsila, and then in Nubia during the UNESCO Salvage Campaign, at sites such as Buhen, Qasr Ibrim, Semna, and Kumma. In retirement, he relocated to 4 Doughty Mews in London – next door to the Egypt Exploration Society. Today, his home houses the Society’s library, a space where members and supporters from around the world can come to read, reflect and research. It is one of the most accessible Egyptology libraries in the UK today, a valuable resource which will be enhanced and expanded as part of the Society’s ambitious Building the Future campaign.

To secure the future and the survival of its irreplaceable collections, the EES is working towards matching the funding of a National Lottery Heritage grant. The EES invites supporters & Local Society Partners to contribute towards this goal. All fees for this event, hosted by the Southampton Ancient Egypt Society, together with any additional personal contributions, will be donated to the ‘Friends of Ricardo A Caminos’ Giving Group.
