The Survey of Memphis

Project director: David Jeffreys, University College London.

The impressive size of the Memphite ruin fields, Egypt’s most long-lived and significant political capital, have long been investigated but the Survey of Memphis, initiated in 1982 to coincide with the Society’s centenary, aims to contextualise previous explorations into the broader landscape. The development of this project since 1982 has helped to define the EES’ scientific programme and its role within Egyptian archaeology.
