Cocoa tins, jewellery boxes, food wrappers and fragments of invitations… In the stores of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology lie hundreds of items left behind by archaeologists and museum workers, in the liminal space between object and archive.

They speak of life in the field, of academic rivalries and early museum operations. Follow the Petrie Museum’s Archaeological Ephemera project down the rabbit hole as we uncover some of these untold stories – of archaeology as a counterculture, of emotional connections between collectors and objects, of students and excavators and other voices left behind by official publications.
