The origins of the Egypt Exploration Society stretch back to 1873, when Amelia Blanford Edwards travelled to Egypt and journeyed ‘A Thousand Miles Up the Nile’. On her return to England, she founded a campaign that resulted in the formation of the Society in April 1882.
The subsequent entanglement of British and Egyptian history, as told through the work of the EES, is visible throughout the Society’s collections of the EES. The archives of the EES present a unique history of Egyptology from the viewpoint of Camden – the base of the EES, on and off, since it first found premises in 1892.
The current state and what the EES premises could look like if our Building the Future campaign is successful.
As we launch our first ‘EES Festival’ celebrating the start of a new chapter in the Society’s contributions to Camden’s local (but international!) heritage, this presentation will reflect on the history of the EES through its collections, the writing of Mary Chubb, and its London locations: from UCL to the British Museum and Tavistock Square, followed by a brief sojourn to the Palestine Exploration Fund outside of Camden, before finding a permanent home in Doughty Mews – the history of Egypt is never far away!
