Investigating Pigments on Egyptian Cartonnage from the Graeco-Roman Period

A view of the Egyptian blue pigment under analysis on EES.CART.101.

This talk explores pigments on cartonnage objects from the EES Graeco-Roman branch. A group of seven cartonnage objects was analysed to investigate their pigment composition and how they have deteriorated. Identified pigments mostly correspond to the pigment palette of the Graeco-Roman Period (c. 332 BCE–395 CE), which was significantly expanded during the Roman invasion. This talk will focus on the identification of Egyptian blue, an unusual find of tin grey on the face, and the preferential loss of red ochre.
