Running across the walls of the EES building for the full month, Behind the Scenes is a group photography exhibition that centres the Egyptian workers whose labour has sustained the archaeology and tourism industries, and whose stories have rarely made it into the archive. Contemporary photographs submitted by Egyptian diaspora photographers through an open call are shown in direct dialogue with historical images from the EES's own photographic archive: excavation photographs, field portraits, and documentary images spanning the society's 140-year history. Curated by Egyptian photographer and anthropologist Halima Ibrahim (University of Oxford), the exhibition highlights the hidden hands of the Egyptology industry.
If you'd like to learn more about how the exhibition was created, stop by the EES on 12th June between 15:00 and 17:00 for Curator's Corner with Halima Ibrahim, who will be on hand to discuss the exhibit and to answer your questions.

Accessibility
Please note that our premises do not currently have step-free access. Our doorways are narrow, internal spaces are accessed via steps and stairs, and our one toilet is at the top of a spiral staircase. These accessibility issues will be resolved by the coming redevelopment; we look forward to being able to accommodate a wider diversity of needs in future.
Booking and information
This exhibition will be available throughout EES Fest in June 2026. Browse during any one of our in-person events scheduled during this time at the EES London Office or visit during our drop-in sessions on Thursdays between 13:30 and 16:30. Please ensure that you have read our guide to attending EES events before the event begins.
