Unpacking the Life and Legacy of Amelia B. Edwards

Portrait Amelia Edwards.jpg

Amelia Edwards is largely remembered today as the founder of the Egypt Exploration Society, but her fascinating and complicated life has led to an even more complex legacy. This live podcast with our host, Charlotte Jordan, and Carl Graves, Director of the EES and author of Amelia B. Edwards: The ‘Queen of Egyptology’ (2025), will unpack some of Amelia’s private life and the events that led her to visit Egypt in 1873. It will question how her relationships with various women in the years before her famous voyage ‘a thousand miles up the Nile’, may be responsible for the journey and her eventual founding of British Egyptology as we know it today. It will reveal some misconceptions in the origins of the EES, and the subsequent distribution of artefacts from Egypt which radically changed over the course of Amelia’s involvement. Charlotte and Carl will also consider what role Amelia’s legacy continues to play at the EES today, on the cusp of transforming our London premises and expanding our charitable mission established almost 150 years ago.
