The Sinai Stela Of Harwerre

Recordings will be made available for those unable to attend the live sessions!

Clayton_Middle Egyptian Reading Texts_Stelae_Harwerre

In this online course over two Saturday afternoons, we will read in detail, in hieroglyphs, the stela of Harwerre from Serabit el-Khadim in Sinai, the mountain-top mining temple dedicated to the goddess Hathor. Harwerre came there to mine copper and turquoise in the heat of the summer, and in his stela, he tells of his own experience and offers advice to those expedition leaders who would come after him. We will also look at some shorter stelae and excerpts from other Middle Kingdom stelae found in Sinai.

The grammar will be thoroughly explained as we come across it, and previous translations of the stela will also be looked at. Although the course will concentrate on translating the text, the historical and archaeological background will also be discussed.

Throughout this course, students will be able to refresh or improve their knowledge of Middle Egyptian and gain some experience of the process of the translation of more advanced texts.

This course is suitable for those who have completed our Online Course: Beyond Intermediate Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, or those who have studied Egyptian to the level where they are able to read, with or without help, the easier passages of Middle Egyptian literature. Please get in touch with [email protected] if you want to discuss your level. There are no tests or exams but each week, to practise what we have learnt, a simple optional task will be given to do at home.
