‘Research shows that mindful interactions with art and drawing can result in a deeper experience and heightened sense of wellbeing.’ - National Portrait Gallery

Ancient Egyptian culture is rich in visual art and design. These motifs inspired later designers when artefacts from Egypt arrived in the West and remain recognisably ‘ancient Egyptian’ to audiences today. This interactive workshop focuses on watercolours painted by Howard Carter and others during the late 19th century (see EES.ART.055, left). Carter’s training as an artist meant that he was employed to document the decoration in the tombs of Beni Hasan in Middle Egypt. He took a particular interest in hieroglyphs and how these signs combined both art and text. Attendees will have an introduction to Egyptian language as well as Carter’s work for the Egypt Exploration Society before the famous discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. There will then be an opportunity to see some of the original paintings by Carter himself.

The main event: Attendees are then encouraged to take inspiration from Carter’s own artwork to create their own art, in their own style. Equipment and refreshments will be provided and EES staff will be on hand if you have questions about Carter’s work. You don’t have to be an expert in drawing but instead use this opportunity to meaningfully engage with Egyptian art and design, and have a go yourself.

The ticket price includes all materials and equipment, and participants can take home their hieroglyph-inspired artwork at the end of the workshop.
