This five-week intermediate-level course builds on previous EES language courses in 2021.

If you have already some background knowledge of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs and want to practise on a text, then this course will do just that. Together we will build up your skills in transliteration, translation, word meanings, grammar and thinking about the background, context and symbolism of a specific text. We will study just one text, The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor (P.Hermitage 1115), as it is often called, in order to focus on one, coherent narrative tale.

  • Different types of signs, their sounds, and meanings
  • Vocabulary
  • Pronouns
  • Numbers (including duality and plurality)
  • Use of verbs and adjectives
  • Basic tense (such as sDm.n=f)
