Photogrammetry Beginners Level

10am-5pm (Egypt) | This 7-day course is part of our in-person Cairo event programme

This program will train archaeologists how to create complete digital documentation of material culture, such as structures, architectural decoration, or movable monuments. It introduces digital documentation as a topic and trains inspectors on modern documentation methods. The training programme takes place over 7 days, designed specifically for archaeological sites and movable monuments.

This workshop is bilingual, mainly in Arabic and using English for software and as an important communication skill with colleagues.

Results

  1. Gain basic knowledge about archaeological documentation, both theoretical and practical.
  2. Understand the different methods of documentation and the modern technological development of these methods.
  3. Learn basic photography skills required for Structure from Motion (SFM).
  4. Learn basic SFM photogrammetry skills, both on-site and in the office.
  5. Collect basic knowledge about geo-database and how to store data.

Required Knowledge

  1. Basic photography skills.
  2. Basic archaeological knowledge and how to conduct manual archaeological documentation (total station knowledge is a bonus).
  3. Basic knowledge of material culture and preliminary documentation requirements in the field.
  4. More than basic computer knowledge.

Equipment

  1. Your Owen Laptop
  2. SLR camera (if possible)

Tutor

Mohamed Osman has a PhD degree from Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. his dissertation is in Landscape archaeology/ Egyptian archaeology and was defended in November 2017 under the supervision of Prof. Dr Jochem Kahl (Head of the department in FU Berlin), and Prof. Dr Dietrich Raue (Director of DAI Cairo).  Mohamed’s PhD is part of the DAAD[1] doctoral funding program between 2013 and 2017. The thesis was printed in August 2022 under ISBN 978-1906137793. Recently, Mohamed is a Post-Doc in the Sun Temples Project, located at the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures, Polish Academy of Sciences.
