The Ben Ezra Synagogue, located in Old Cairo in the area of the Coptic city, probably dates to the first century AD, though the current building is now much restored. It is one of the oldest seats of the Jewish faith in Egypt and is situated on the site where the baby Moses was found. During the 19th century, the storeroom, or geniza, of the synagogue was found to contain a collection of unique Hebrew, Aramaic and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts.
