Online Course: Intermediate Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs The course will follow on from the Beginners course and study selected inscriptions from artefacts and monuments. The course will analyse five Egyptian hieroglyphic texts, to understand the content and context of the texts, build up vocabulary and grammatical experience. The texts will be provided with translations and vocabulary before the class to enable students to look at them in advance and in the class we will dissect the texts carefully and improve on the original translations. The chosen examples will enable students to tackle other texts they may encounter in their reading or on Museum and site visits. Penny Wilson has chosen texts to reflect the range of different people and their ‘voices’, from Kings to high officials and their workforces, and to deal with practical tasks as well as theological expression. To participate in this course, we highly recommend that you have attended the EES' previous Beginner course, or are confident in translating Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Book Tutor Dr Penelope (Penny) Wilson is Associate Professor of Egyptology in the Department of Archaeology at Durham University, UK. She is currently the Director of the EES Delta Survey Project, and Project Director of the joint EES/Durham University archaeological mission at Sais in the western Delta. Penny is a specialist in both Egyptian languages and field archaeology and since 2019 also sits on the Society’s Board of Trustees.
