The Birth of the Modern Nation

Rescheduled

In 2019, the British Egyptian Society, together with the London Middle East Institute at SOAS and the Council for British Research in the Levant, held a two-day Conference at SOAS, University of London. There were 10 sessions over two days with some very distinguished speakers from the UK, Egypt and the USA. It was well attended, and the talks and debates were of a very high standard. It was decided to produce a book on the conference’s themes, using a selection of the conference’s presentations as inspiration for chapters. Professor Robert Springborg and Dr Hisham A. Hellyer agreed to source further authors to produce a volume made up of chapters of brand-new research, in addition to those based on presentations made in the BES conference. Dr Hellyer and Professor Springborg then became co-editors of the resulting manuscript, and submitted it to Bloomsbury Press, where it won high praise from Bloomsburg’s independent reviewers.

This evening, 6 of the authors will take part in a Zoom meeting, talking about their work and answering questions in a Q and A. The two editors, Professor Springborg and Dr Hellyer, also will take part. Do please join us. There is no charge.
