Description
Abydos was one of the most important cities throughout ancient Egyptian history. The lecture focuses on its late Old Kingdom phase, highlighting some of the most remarkable people from this influential provincial city, including Princess Ankhesenpepy II and Vizier Weni the Elder. The lecture will then turn to the new research on 'Cemetery F', where the middle class denizens of the same period were buried. The cemetery was excavated in 1908 but remains virtually unpublished to this day. The project is partially funded by the Egypt Exploration Society's Centenary Award (http://www.ees.ac.uk/research/centenary-awards.html).
Kei Yamamoto received his PhD in Egyptian archaeology at the University of Toronto, and is the current Vice President of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (SSEA). He has participated in a number of archaeological projects at Abydos and written several articles about the site.
Entry is free of charge but numbers are limited to 30 so application for tickets as normal is required.
