Description

THIS LECTURE HAS NOW BEEN RESCHEDULED FOLLOWING THE EARLIER POSTPONEMENT DUE TO THE CLOSURE OF EUROPEAN AIRSPACE.

The impressive Middle and New Kingdom fortresses at Buhen in Lower Nubia are well-known, as are the remains of the associated town and temples of the New Kingdom. However much less is known of the importance of the Old Kingdom Settlement which was excavated by the EES during two campaigns led by W. B. Emery. This is in fact the earliest Egyptian urban centre founded as part of the expansionist Egyptian policy which began in the Fourth Dynasty, if not earlier, and ended with the abandonment of the intensive work at the quarries of Toshka after the late Fifth Dynasty.
Sealings are artefacts, that is to say they were manufactured, hand-made. They should be considered the final product at the end of a chain of production and control of goods, and provide evidence of the administration of the settlement. As this type of material is often fragmentary and found out of context, it is certainly one of the most difficult to investigate and interpret, but also among the most interesting, as is shown by the preliminary results from a study of the typology, archaeological context (chronological and stratigraphic) and epigraphy of the seals of the Old Kingdom Town at Buhen.

Entry is free of charge but numbers are limited to 30 so application for tickets as normal is required.
