A guide to the classification of books etc. in the library
The Caminos Library (LIB) is divided into four sections:
Periodicals. These are arranged alphabetically by their abbreviation (see list on p. 8), and then by volume number. Each title is given a shelfmark composed of the suffix ‘per’ for ‘periodical’, followed by the standard abbreviation for that title e.g. per JEA for the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology. Titles of which we have only one or two issues are classified as 'per Misc' (miscellaneous).
Pamphlets. These are offprinted or photocopied articles and reviews, mostly from periodicals which we do not take e.g. Nature. They are arranged alphabetically by author, so each simply carries the shelfmark ‘pamphlet’.
Series. Books from certain, numbered Egyptological series such as Brill’s Probleme der Ägyptologie, are kept together. Each volumes in this section has a shelfmark composed of the suffix ‘ser’ for series, followed by the standard abbreviation of the series name e.g. ‘ser PdA’ for Probleme der Ägyptologie. The series are arranged alphabetically by abbreviation, and in numerical order within each series.
All other books are arranged by subject according to a unique system devised with Egyptological literature in mind. The shelfmarks are composed of two letters, in some cases followed by a full stop and then a number, and run in alphabetical order i.e. AA is followed by AB then AC, and IJ.1 by IJ.2, IJ.3 and so on. The books are divided according to a list of very broad subjects such as ‘history’, or ‘religion’ (see list below), within each of which are a series of subdivisions meaning each book is shelved next to others on very closely related themes. Books dealing with specific sites and monuments, site reports* and related studies, and Museum catalogues (shelfmarks QA to VU) are all kept on the first floor. Everything else (AA to PD), including the basic reference tools such as PM and LÄ, is housed on the ground floor.
*These are kept together in series e.g. The EES’ Excavation Memoirs, and in numerical order. The series numbers, which are usually written on the spine label in smaller type do not however form part of the shelfmark as such.
One last suffix to watch out for is ‘fol’ (for folio) which precedes the usual 2 letter shelfmark and denotes larger volumes. Books with shelfmarks fol AA to fol PD are kept on the ground floor to the left of the door to the small ‘new’ room. fol QA to fol VU are kept on the first floor.
